Why I Photograph Women In Their Underwear

Updated: Jul 30, 2018

My name is Jennifer Hennigan and I am the Owner and Photographer of Eye Candy Boudoir. I've been doing photography for 6 years, but only started the Eye Candy brand in March of 2018. Before doing boudoir I was photographing mostly graduating seniors, engaged couples and a few weddings. I heard about boudoir online, but initially did not understand the significance. I had this idea in my head that boudoir was for vain slender women who wanted sexy photos of themselves and had too much money, or brides to give their husbands. I thought it would be an interesting experience to do a boudoir shoot, but never thought it would become my biggest passion.

I decided to do a little more research on boudoir and realized it has nothing to do with vanity. While still in college I read an article about a woman who was married, had 2 children, in her thirties, and had not seen herself as physically attractive since she was 12 years old. No matter how many times her husband told her she was beautiful it was impossible for her to really believe him. By the time I got to the end of the article I was sobbing in my car. It was when she finally went through with a boudoir shoot that she finally saw herself as the desirable woman he always told her she was. I knew that that was a feeling I wanted to give to other women. A feeling of self worth and confidence.

Back in the summer of 2017 was my low point. For the past 2 years since I graduated college I was living in Austin and started a digital marketing business. I found myself struggling to convince small businesses to hire me to run their social media. Many people didn't take what I did seriously, or just wanted to hire me as an employee and give me part time work. Things got so bad I finally had put all my stuff in storage and move home with my parents. I worked on a website for a company out of California, and took care of my aunts mother for a little bit of income. One thing I really enjoyed about being home with my parents is getting to hang out with a really great friend of mine who was going through a hard time in her marriage.

We decided to do an outdoor boudoir session in her back yard. We spent about 5 hours outside, with multiple outfits, set ups, and props. At the end of the day we were both exhausted, but as she looked through the photos she giggled and jumped up and down in her seat with so much joy. She asked me "is it wrong that I'm feeling in love with myself right now?" That was the first time I felt the pride that comes with being a boudoir photographer.

It was also during this low point that I realized that I needed to stop focusing on digital marketing and focus on photography. For the first time ever I was doing something people were coming to me for and saw value in. I finally got myself back in my own place, in Austin and provide for myself by giving that feeling to so many people, and I couldn't be happier.
